"Students of Ojutai" - February 20, 2015

Happy Friday! It's Draft day here at Card Advantage MTG, and we have one of Tams' favourite archetypes today. Check it out, and tell us what you think in the comments!

Blue White Skies is almost always a deck which you CAN put together in Draft, whether you should or not depends on what the rest of the set looks like. Since Jeskai is already a perfectly acceptable colour combination in FKK, the blue white fliers deck is here to be crafted, and that's exactly what we did.

Despite Flying being an evergreen mechanic, it amazes me how often people leave their decks with no real way to deal with flyers. Much like with an aggressive deck, if you come up against someone who's left themselves open, you can get a few free wins by just having evasion.

Of course, most games are still not easy. Any decent removal will take out a flyer, and decks usually do have one or two of their own, or something with reach. In Khans of Tarkir especially, there are quite a few things which can stop the small flyers.

Of course, our whole deck wasn't flyers either. We also ended up with a few prowess creatures, and a Hordechief for value. All in all it was a fine deck, if not our best. I'd have preferred not to run the War Behemoth, or the third Student.

All and all, 2-1 was the appropriate record for that deck. Join us next week, when we can hopefully go all the way.

Thanks for watching, and we'll see you next time,

"Sultai Manimals" - February 16, 2015

Boy it's been a busy few days! First there was Friday the 13th, then Valentine's day (which was also game day FRF), now it's Monday and we still haven't posted the draft! It's a good one, too. Check it out!

This deck came together surprisingly well. First picking a build around mythic helps, but even still, it takes something to make a strategy work.

In all honesty, we had pretty good luck, which combined well with a strong deck and good plays. There were a few glaring exceptions, such as pitching a vital land and a throttle in the bin. Sometimes errors are made while playing MTGO that would never be made in paper, but that is part of the fun and challenge of playing online.

When the Manifest mechanic was revealed there was a lot of doubt surrounding it's usability. When Tams saw it she decided we needed to try putting it in a deck full of manifest and morphs, and that's basically what we got here. It really helps not to have to put any resources into manifesting. Getting a free 2/2 every turn really is excellent, and when you've got the up side of being able to unmorph a flyer, it really shifts the game.

I still haven't gotten through to Wizards about the two client issues. I'm not worried about getting an event reimbursement, but I do want to submit a bug report. A morph is not a token, and having the client treat it as a token is a pretty major error. I'll let you know if anything comes of that conversation.

In the mean time, I'm excited to finally get this draft out to you, and hopefully we'll have just as interesting a video series coming this Friday.

Thanks for watching and we'll see you next time,

Bonus Draft - February 11, 2015

One of the great things about Magic is being able to share something you love so passionately with some of your friends. In the spirit of that, we have something special for you today.

This past week we teamed up with John-As-Always from The Mana Leek, and Alex from VC Games to bring you a triple Fate Reforged draft. We all hopped into the same queue, so you get to have the experience of seeing three perspectives of the same draft! Check it out.

While I know that triple fate isn't a "real format", it was still very interesting to draft. There was a bunch of fixing floating around thanks to the gain lands being in every pack, but there was absolutely nothing pushing us into the wedge based clans. As a result, We and Alex both moved into a shard, and ended up with fairly strong decks.

The only problem with events like this is that they're not swiss. I find it pretty hilarious that we all washed out in the first round, but it was fun all the same. I imagine we'll do something like this again in the future, but with a swiss draft, so that we get the chance of facing each other.

We'll be back this Friday with our regularly scheduled draft, and in the mean time, check out The Mana Leek and VC Games.

Thanks for watching, and we'll see you next time,

"Alesha All The Way" - February 06, 2015

It's finally time! The long awaited (by us) sealed event for Fate Reforged! It was a ton of fun to do, and as you're about to see, we did really well.

Mardu is a no nonsense clan, a very straightforward "hit you in the face" mentality goes into crafting these decks, but that doesn't mean there isn't room for nuance. Our deck turned out to be more midrange than straight aggro, and that gave us a little bit of wiggle room, but we still wanted to keep our curve low so that we could play out more than one thing once we got to the later point in the game.

Alesha is especially strong in limited. With the amount of two power creatures we had, there was always something good to get back, and getting to reuse enter the battlefield effects made that even better.

Our end record was 4-0, and even though one of those was a non round, I feel pretty good about it.

I'd also like to mention that Fate Reforged has been out for a little while now, and I kind of feel like we're late in getting this up, even though it was right on schedule. I wish we had the resources to put up videos twice a week, but we're still paying the piper with every draft, so we have to watch our expenditures. If you'd like to help us provide more content, please consider clicking on the ads in our videos. Any profits we make from that goes directly into providing more videos.

Thanks for watching, and we'll see you next time,
